Responsible advertising: should certain brands be banned from children?

Advertising in the world of sport is big business. Not only are there advertisements on and around the pitch or court, but almost every single athlete or sports personality also wears at least one sponsored brand on their clothing.

In British football (soccer), every team has a big corporate sponsor, ranging from telecommunications companies to financial institutions to airlines to high street brands. In short, almost any company that has enough cash to pay for the publicity can bid to feature on the front of a team’s kit.

Pepsi's Logo Mishap

In 2009, Pepsi spent a rumored one million dollars to revamp their logo design. The company was ridiculed in the mainstream media for the exuberant amount of money it spent and insult was added to injury when graphic design artist Lawrence Yang further ridiculed the design by creating a sketch of an obese “Pepsi Man,” highlighting the negative health effects of sugary soft drinks.

Sports field logo design

Once upon a time, sports fields were green. Sometimes with subtle stripes mown into the lawn, and white painted boundary lines approproate to the sport, but in general, pitches were green as grass.

But advertising at sporting fixtures has become such big business that companies must now be increasingly innovative with their product placement.

Netflix logo “refreshed”

Movie rental subscription service Netflix has been around now for almost twenty years. A lot has changed during that time; mostly recently Netflix’s logo design.

When Netflix first started, the only way you could use it to watch movies and TV box sets was to create a wishlist of titles online, and then wait for the physical DVDs to be delivered to your door. Back then, in the late 1990s, Netflix’s logo was designed to catch the eye among the other envelopes that arrived in the mail; it was all bold, shadowed type and a bright red, black and white pallette.

New logo for the city of Halifax

The Canadian city of Halifax is the latest to join the growing trend for new logos.

Commissioned by Halifax Regional Municipality and designed by branding agency Revolve Branding, the logo is part of a whole new branding strategy, which was unanimously supported by members of the Executive Standing Committee.

New logo design for Reebok

When I was younger, everyone – everyone! – wanted a pair of Reebok Classic running shoes. In fact, this particular model of shoe was quite inappropriate for running and seemed to wear out a little too quickly for my pestered and cash-strapped parents’ liking, but for some reason – along with an Adidias tracksuit, these shoes were all the rage among teenagers in mid-1990’s Britain.

A short history of Twitter’s logo design
